“The act of sewing causes damage as a needle pierces material and then thread is used to reunite the pierced hole with another one thus, creating a bond. The careful combination of actions that occur between creating damage and uniting together become a dynamic that holds the potential to heal in an abstract and cognitive level. With the intense environmental stresses combining with a teacher’s compassion fatigue, I need the opportunity to use my hands in rhythmic time to sew as a creative outlet and therapeutic management. Therefore, sewing techniques acquired years ago from my mother will be used to reinvent the historical memorabilia left to me as I recall my relationship with my grandmother. My intent through this M.F.A. exhibition is to reveal the moments of satisfying closure, investigatory craftsmanship and reinvention of familial histories.” Educator and mixed media artist, Amy Fihe, as presented within her thesis exhibition.
